With homebrewing, a friend got me a Mr. Beer kit one year, knowing what I know now, it shouldn't have turned out very good, but it did and I moved on to 5 gallons at a time.

Geocaching just seemed interesting, I started out with a garmin NUVI hoping the battery would last long enough to find the cache, and going home to log the find online. I now have a couple of handheld gps units, and use my phone as well.
