Do you sleep in silence, or do you have to have background noise? Is there a reason for this? How about light? Does it have to be pitch black, or do you need at least a sliver of light to sleep?

My preference is to sleep in silence, but it never works out that way. In summer there is the AC running, and in winter, a fan running by the wood stove to circulate the heat. That, and the periodic runnings around like batshit crazy by the cats.

I absolutely have to have a fan or white noise machine running or I can't sleep. Silence isn't bad, but it's never actually silent and the intermittent creaks, animal noises, cars, etc. keep me awake (it's why leaving the TV or music on doesn't work for me, either). I prefer for it to be as dark as possible. I can sleep if there is a little light, but I sleep better when it's totally dark.

Due to a lovely little problem I was born with, called hyperacusis (oversensitive hearing), I have to have music, or a loudly ticking wind-up clock, or something, in the background whether I'm awake or asleep. Without it, my ears would eventually revert to thinking normal conversational volume is painfully loud.

When it comes to light, I have trouble falling asleep during the summer (and want to sleep way too much in the winter). Nightlights are kind of essential because we have dark cats who like to sleep in doorways.

My room has to be pitch black and I can't sleep with much noise or the TV on. Occasionally, I'll run the fan or the air purifier on the quietest setting.
