Today's Adventures

Today we went down to Effingham for the Oddities Market at the Thelma Keller Convention Center, hosted by Hazel-Jayne Crystals & Gifts. We still have not made it back to the actual Hazel-Jayne and want to do so.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 8/23/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Email Aliases

[personal profile] arlie mentioned in a post that Protonmail allows you to create email aliases to avoid spam.  This also seems extremely useful for cases where someone extorts your email from you before giving you something you need, but you don't really want to hear from them afterwards.

The Eligible Bachelor, based on The Noble Bachelor....

Seems to be a hella lot of people having psychological freak outs, Holmes in particular,

whereas the rich ladies wandering around partying all over were happy with all their accoutrements and so forth and divination, I think…

But, ugh, some dude gold digging and killing wives or making them suffer, yucky!

It resolved, though, and people were happy…

ahhhhh...

Philosophical Questions: Money

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

Could societies exist without a way to transfer value (i.e. without money or a barter system)?

Heat

The Truth About Caffeine, Dehydration, and Extreme Heat

As dangerous heat waves sweep the U.S., the CDC cautions against consuming caffeine. But not every expert is convinced the advice needs to be one-size-fits-all.
[---8<---]
"Don’t drink liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar — these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks because they can cause stomach cramps," the CDC wrote in its Extreme Heat guidance. It doubles down on this warning on its Heat and Your Health page, though with softer language, stating, "Consider limiting beverages high in sugars and sodium, caffeine, and alcohol, if possible."

Early Humans

Ancient fossil discovery in Ethiopia rewrites human origins

The fossils found in northeastern Ethiopia date between 2.6 to 2.8 million years ago and shed new light on human evolution.
In the deserts of Ethiopia, scientists uncovered fossils showing that early members of our genus Homo lived side by side with a newly identified species of Australopithecus nearly three million years ago. These finds challenge the old idea of a straight evolutionary ladder, revealing instead a tangled web of ancient relatives
.

I'm surprised to find such far-flung relatives coexisting like that, but it's a happier image than today's lonely Homo.

Books

23 Must-Read Books About Hope That Inspire Change & Action

John Parsi, executive director of the Hope Center, says that while optimistic people see the glass as half full, hopeful people ask how they can fill the glass full.

“Hope requires a person to take responsibility for their wants and desires and take action in working towards them,” Parsi says.

So whether you’re looking to start, sustain, or complete something, we hope the books included in this list inspire you to take action and work towards whatever goals you have in front of you
.

I am particularly charmed to see “The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen’s Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear” edited by Paul Rogat Loeb because I've got a poem in that one, "Origami Emotion," from a couple decades ago.

(no subject)

Hurricane Erin is sending some nicer weather our way, and this week we've had close to three inches of rain. I think we're officially out of a drought state at this point. We keep having little blobs of storms form and pass over.

Fox and I were discussing a camping trip all the way out to the Keys, which I've never had a chance to visit. We're still thinking of that but as a slightly easier, shorter trip, we're also looking at going the other way across the state and visiting Venice. As part of that we can actually go camp out in one of the state parks which is known for having dark skies - and I shouldn't have to tell y'all why dark skies are so awesome and important. Venice is known for having a shark tooth beach where you can just scoop up sand and it's filled with shark teeth. Fox says his little brother had a Mason jar full of them when they were kids, which he'd picked up on a family trip out there. So those sound like interesting adventures, and I could easily see a two or three day trip with the camper.

We started watching Severance, so we're a little late to the waffle party. It's hitting Fox more than it is me, because he's been a corporate cube-dweller, so he's very familiar with life in a structured, controlling environment. Most of my work experience has been government, which is its own kind of weirdness. Especially in state and local offices, which can be like the love child of Kafka and Faulkner. There's always one office staffed by a lone guy or gal with a serious caffeine addiction and no outside life, and heaven help the county if they happen to die.

Ugh, I need to go lift, do my Japanese study, and I haven't gotten any writing or art done.

Random Notes

On today's Yoga With Bird, "Is it kundalini energy, or just hot flashes?" We'll discuss, after we turn a couple of fans on.

There was a Barred Owl perched in or very near the front yard this morning before sunrise, hooting its head off. It was also 71 when I got up - a nice reprieve from the summer heat. We still have September to go but it's always nice to see signs of cooler weather.

One of my race medal hangers seems to be pulling away from the wall. Might head into town later and pick up some drywall anchors - the big, burly kind at Home Depot. I also need to make a run to the dump with trash Fox & I picked up. We estimate about 120 pounds, and it includes half a truck grill, a street light cover, and a whole entire mobile home door.

These are active communities in Dreamwidth from Summer 2025. They include things I've posted, but only the active ones; the thematic posts also list dormant communities of interest. This list includes some communities that I've found and saved but haven't made it into thematic posts yet. This post covers A-I.

See my Follow Friday Master Post for more topics.

Highly active with multiple posts per day, daily posts, or too many to count easily
Active with (one, multiple, many) posts in (current or recent month)
Somewhat active (latest post within current year, not in last month or few)
Low traffic (latest post in previous year)
Dormant (latest post before previous year, but could be revived because membership is open and posting is open to all members or anyone)
Dead (not listed because there are no recent posts, plus membership and/or posting are moderated)
Note that some communities are only active during a limited time, or only have gather posts on a certain schedule.

LJ Idol: Wheel of Chaos: "Going BATty"

Going BATty
Idol Wheel of Chaos | Week 7 | 1460 words
BAT (intersection with rayaso. Read my story first.)

x-x-x-x-x

As a free-range scientist, John Thornbuckle was one of the foremost BAT experts on earth. He had wowed the world with his earlier work in Bovine Accelerated Transport (culminating in cows that jumped over the moon) and Bogus Association Tendency (where conspiracies are born). Previously, he had also studied Blind Acquisition Theory (the compulsion to grab everything in sight) and Bat-Affiliated Trauma (which included pervasive paranoia about bats getting into one's hair).

Thornbuckle knew people were in awe of him. Whenever he met someone and explained what he did, they just stood there gaping at him. They were speechless with admiration! And he certainly cut a striking figure, with his black, geek-chic glasses, his pomaded hair, and his bedazzled pocket protector.

He was used to the stares and whispers. What celebrity wouldn't be?

But Thornbuckle knew that science was serious business. Those facts and correlations wouldn't liberate themselves! No, they required prying and digging–like juicy gossip in a movie star's background. And Thornbuckle, who thought secrets were for the weak, was just the man to do it.

Each day, he rolled off the sofa-bed in his office and set about exposing those hidden truths. What made cows want to be airborne? Why was "stuff" so appealing?

And why were bats so rubbery that they seemed to stick to everything?
